y2="14"></line>

If you’ve been subscribed to this newsletter for a while, you’ve noticed something: it went quiet.

That wasn’t an accident. I stopped posting because I was in the middle of something bigger than I could explain in a weekly email — and I didn’t want to keep showing up with content that no longer reflected what I was actually building.

Now I can explain it. And I’m ready to show up again — consistently, with purpose, and with something worth your time every single week.

Here’s what changed.

For the last several years, this newsletter was called “Build Your Own Stage.” It was built around personal branding — how entrepreneurs and leaders could build visibility and influence in a noisy world. That work mattered to me, and I believe it helped the people who read it.

But somewhere along the way, I kept getting pulled toward a different question. A bigger one.

What happens to the 60-year-old who has spent 35 years building something — a career, a business, a family, a life — and suddenly finds themselves at the edge of retirement with no real guide for what comes next?

Not a financial advisor who talks to them twice a year. Not a government website written in bureaucratic language. Not AARP, with its 38 million members and its discount card.

An actual guide. Someone who shows up consistently, speaks clearly, and treats them like the experienced, capable adult they are.

That question became an obsession. And that obsession became Next Chapter Media.

What I’m building.

Next Chapter Media is a retirement-focused media company built to serve adults 55 and above — the most experienced, most active, and most underserved generation in digital media today.

Under that umbrella: Benefits Insider, our flagship YouTube channel covering Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and retirement benefits. The Retirement Navigator Podcast. Next Chapter Magazine — print and digital. A membership community. A research institute. An animated series. A store. An ecosystem built around a single mission: helping older adults navigate retirement with confidence.

A 60-year-old today has a realistic 25 to 40-year runway ahead of them. That is not a postscript to a life. That is another entire adult life. It deserves a guide worthy of it.

I’m building that guide. And this newsletter is where I’ll think out loud about all of it.

What’s coming here every week.

Starting this week, and every week going forward, you’ll get one piece of writing from me. No filler. No recycled content. Just one thing worth reading.

It will be some combination of:

My take on what’s happening in retirement, Social Security, Medicare, or aging in America — and what it actually means for the people navigating it right now.

A framework or mental model I’m using to think about retirement differently. These are the proprietary ideas I’m building the whole company around — and you’ll get them first.

Behind-the-scenes thinking on what it takes to build a trusted media company from scratch in 2026 — what’s working, what surprised me, and what I’m learning.

Research and data from the Next Chapter Institute — findings that should be making headlines but aren’t yet.

The throughline in all of it: no panic. No politics. Just clarity.

One ask before I go.

Hit reply and tell me where you are in the retirement journey. Are you pre-retirement, newly retired, actively navigating it, helping a parent, or just watching what I’m building from a professional angle?

I read every reply. Your answer shapes what I write about.

The next chapter is longer than most people realize.

Let’s make sure you’re ready for it.

— Kwame

Co-Founder, Next Chapter Media and Adjunct Professor, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School

Picture: The Palace of Versailles

Success Without Visibility is a Waste!

Learn 3 proven strategies to turn your expertise into authority!

Kwame Kuadey

You've built something valuable, but remain hidden from those who need you most.

Here are 3 proven strategies to transform your visibility as an entrepreneur:

1. Leverage Your Unique Business Story

Every entrepreneur has a journey unlike anyone else's.

What obstacles did you overcome to build your business?

What unconventional approach sets your solution apart?

What insight have you gained that others haven't?

These elements of your story create natural differentiation in a crowded market.

Share them consistently and you'll attract people who resonate specifically with your path.

3. Build A System That Works For You

Visibility shouldn't require becoming a full-time content creator.

Schedule one monthly session to capture insights in bulk.

Use voice notes to record ideas between meetings.

Partner with someone who can transform your expertise into polished content.

The right system makes visibility sustainable alongside running your business.

Remember: Your expertise remains hidden until shared. Feel free to forward this to friends who might find it valuable.

Tip #1: Authenticity Through Story Loops
Worried about coming across as inauthentic? Instead of trying to be perfect, share your ongoing journey. Create "story loops" by starting with a challenge, sharing your process of overcoming it, and updating your audience on progress. For example, I recently shared my struggles with content creation consistency and documented my experiment with different scheduling approaches. This vulnerability resonated more than any "success story" could have.

Tip #2: The 1:10 Content Multiplication Framework
Tired of spending hours creating content while running your business? Here's a game-changer: Record one 5-minute video sharing your expertise on a topic. From this single video, create 10 pieces of content: 3 LinkedIn posts with key insights, 2 carousel posts breaking down your main points, 3 short-form video clips with your best soundbites, and 2 quote graphics with your memorable statements. This approach turns 5 minutes of recording into two weeks of content.

Tip #3: The Consultation-First Strategy
Want to generate higher-quality leads? Stop selling. Instead, position every piece of content as a micro-consultation. Share specific solutions to common problems in your industry, then ask your audience what challenges they're facing. When people comment with their problems, don't pitch – offer additional insights and ask thoughtful follow-up questions. This approach naturally leads to deeper conversations and organic business opportunities.

Quote I'm pondering
"Ask people for money and they will give you advice. Ask them for advice and they will give you money" - Ryan Shortill. This resonates deeply with my approach to business relationships. When you genuinely seek to learn from others rather than sell to them, you build authentic connections that naturally lead to opportunities. I've seen this play out countless times – the most valuable business relationships often start with a simple request for guidance.

As always, I'd love to hear your feedback! Which tip was most useful? What topics would you like to see covered in future editions? Let me know by replying to this email or reaching out on LinkedIn.

Have a fantastic Friday and a great weekend ahead!

Best regards,
Kwame Kuadey

3 Tips Friday — November 8, 2024

The latest personal branding tips from Kwame Kuadey

Kwame Kuadey

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to this week's edition of 3 Tips Friday, where I share my top personal branding tips. When you show up regularly, your audience begins to expect and look forward to your content. This builds trust and positions you as the go-to authority in your space. Remember: when it's time for your audience to make a decision, they'll think of the person who's been consistently providing value.

Tip #2: Leverage Strategic Engagement
Create two lists: one for industry experts/authorities and another for potential clients. Engage meaningfully with their content, providing valuable insights in comments. When you contribute thoughtfully to conversations in your niche, you become visible to both thought leaders and potential clients. This strategic engagement helps build your own community of engaged followers.

Tip #3: Embrace Video Content
Video is becoming LinkedIn's most powerful engagement tool. My recent experience shows this clearly: out of my last 10 videos, three went viral, reaching between 140,000 to 387,000 impressions – far above my usual 1,000-1,500 range. Video helps you connect more personally with your audience and demonstrates your expertise in a way that text simply cannot match.

Bonus: Want More Engagement Tips?
I've actually uncovered 7 more proven strategies for boosting LinkedIn engagement! Join my newsletter community to receive my upcoming deep-dive guide "10 Proven Strategies for LinkedIn Success." I'll be sharing insights about leveraging AI tools, optimizing your profile, hosting live sessions, and more. Don't miss out on these game-changing tactics!

Quote I'm pondering "Action Absorbs Anxiety!" I discovered this truth while reflecting on my own journey of overcoming anxiety. It perfectly captures how taking action, no matter how small, gradually diminishes anxiety's grip on us. When anxiety creeps in, the antidote isn't waiting – it's doing.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Newsletter Image
"Quick behind-the-scenes peek! 👀 I used ChatGPT to create this custom illustration for today's newsletter. Feel free to forward this to friends who might find it valuable.

Tip #1: Why LinkedIn Newsletters Are Your Next Power Move
LinkedIn newsletters are a game-changing opportunity you can't afford to miss. Here's why: They achieve incredible engagement with 27-50% open rates, and in the first 24 hours alone, about 10% of your followers typically subscribe. Plus, 98% of the top 500 LinkedIn newsletters belong to individuals, not companies. This means you're missing out on direct access to your audience if you're not leveraging this tool. Each newsletter reaches subscribers via both email and LinkedIn notifications, dramatically amplifying your visibility.

For inspiration, check out my LinkedIn Newsletter on Personal Branding here. I launched this in January and currently have 2,790 subscribers and counting.

Tip #2: Craft a Newsletter That Captures Attention
Start with a compelling title and description that clearly communicates your unique value proposition. Your newsletter's success hinges on three key elements: a captivating profile image (300x300 pixels) that reflects your brand, an engaging cover image (1920x1080 pixels) that draws readers in, and a clear content mission that addresses your audience's specific needs. Remember, you can create up to 5 different newsletters, allowing you to target distinct segments of your audience with specialized content.

Tip #3: Launch Strategy That Converts
Don't wait for a massive following—even with 600 followers, you can build something meaningful. Focus on quality over quantity and be consistent with your schedule. The key is to craft slightly spicy subject lines that entice opens, deliver high-value content that addresses real pain points, and actively encourage engagement from your readers. Most importantly, maintain a consistent publishing schedule to build trust and improve open rates over time.

Quote I'm pondering
"If you can figure out a way to be humble and confident at the same time, you will find success" - Wei-Li Chong. This powerful insight from a guest speaker at my Johns Hopkins University entrepreneurship class resonates deeply. It reminds us that true leadership combines the confidence to challenge the status quo with the humility to remain open to new perspectives. Success comes from balancing conviction with curiosity, believing in your ideas while accepting that you don't have all the answers.

Something Interesting I learned this week
Start in November.
Start from nothing.
Start with fear.
Start breaking free.
Start being you.
Start now.
START.

There's profound wisdom in this simple message—don't wait for January or perfect conditions. Your journey begins exactly where you are, even with fear, even with nothing. The perfect time to start is right now.

As always, I'd love to hear your feedback! Which tip was most useful? Feel free to forward this to friends who might find it valuable.

Tip #1: Bulletproof Your Success
Your personal brand is more than just a marketing tool—it's your insurance policy for long-term success. When markets shift or opportunities change, your personal brand becomes your safety net. It acts as a launchpad for new ventures and ensures you're never starting from zero. Remember: Today's thriving business could be tomorrow's stepping stone, but your personal brand carries you forward, no matter what.

Tip #2: Optimize Your LinkedIn First Impression
Your LinkedIn profile is your digital first impression and often the #1 search result for your name. Make it count with these four must-do upgrades: Create a banner image that showcases your expertise, craft a headline that clearly states your value proposition, write an about section that tells your compelling journey, and consistently share content that demonstrates your authority. Don't let an inactive profile scream "amateur" to potential clients.

Tip #3: Scale Your Personal Brand Content
Your personal brand gets 561% more reach than your company brand online and converts 7x more leads. The key is consistency in content creation. Consider implementing a content multiplication system where one piece of content (like a 10-minute video) can be transformed into two weeks worth of content across different platforms. This efficient approach allows you to build your brand while minimizing the time investment.

Bonus: Content Creation Strategy
Sign up for a free demo of my Content Multiplier System. With just 10 minutes of focused effort, you can create enough content to maintain a strong online presence for weeks. This multiplier effect ensures your personal brand stays active and engaging without overwhelming your schedule.

Quote I'm pondering "When We're Done, You'll Be Happy, If You're Not Happy, We're Not Done" — This brilliant tagline from a home services company exemplifies the power of a strong value proposition and unconditional guarantee. Feel free to forward this to friends who might find it valuable.

Tip #1: Leverage Lead Magnets Effectively
When offering free lead magnets to build your email list, create anticipation. Announce your lead magnet (e.g., a LinkedIn checklist) a day before its release. Encourage people to subscribe to your newsletter to receive it, associating value with your brand and boosting sign-ups.

Tip #2: Choose the Right Newsletter Platform
If you're struggling with your newsletter due to platform limitations, consider switching to a more user-friendly option like Substack. It allows for quick, easy publishing and doubles as a blog post, increasing your content's reach and simplifying your workflow.

Tip #3: Share Photos with Others at Events
Your audience wants to see you interacting with others, not just solo pictures. When attending conferences or events, take and share photos with other people. Giving your followers a behind-the-scenes experience of these events tends to perform well on platforms like LinkedIn.

Bonus: What I'm listening to this week
"The Obstacle is the Way" by Ryan Holiday - a book that teaches how to turn challenges into opportunities.

Quote I'm pondering
"You can have a thousand problems in life until you have a health problem, and then you only have one problem. And as Imam Shafi'i said, “good health is like a crown that the healthy wear, but only the sick can see." Source.

As always, I'd love to hear your feedback! And should you decide to quit, you know its based on solid information and not out of fear or self doubt.

You eliminate regret. Should you decide it’s not for you, you know you gave it a real chance.

What are you going to try and do consistently 100 times?

I will go first - I am going to get my recently launched daily motivational podcast (The Daily Breakthrough) to 100 episodes.

What excites me about this commitment is the learning along the way. I can’t wait to share the results with you.

Wish me luck!

Thanks for reading Kwame’s Newsletter!
